Why does Thomas mean twin? The Biblical connection explained

Been researching my name and found out Thomas comes from the Aramaic word Teoma meaning twin. This was actually a nickname for the apostle Thomas in the Bible whose real name was Judas (yes, the same name as the betrayer, which is probably why the nickname stuck). The Greek version became Didymus, also meaning twin. Does anyone know if the apostle Thomas actually had a twin sibling? Ive found conflicting information.

Great question! Theres actually a tradition in some early Christian texts that Thomas was the twin brother of Jesus himself. The Acts of Thomas from the 3rd century suggests this. Most scholars consider it apocryphal but its a fascinating bit of religious history.

According to some traditions, yes. Though mainstream Christianity doesnt accept this interpretation. Still, its interesting that the twin connection has persisted in the names meaning for over 2000 years.

What I find interesting is how Thomas spread throughout Europe in different forms - Tomas in Spanish, Tommaso in Italian, Toomas in Estonian. The twin meaning was probably lost on most people using the name after a few centuries.

I actually named one of my twin boys Thomas specifically because of this meaning! His brother is named Phillip. Thought it was a nice subtle reference.
